This course is best for participants from countries where English is the first language such as the U.S.A., the U.K., Canada, New Zealand and of course Australia, and for participants whose own first language is English.
The only real criteria for this course are developed computer skills, particularly in MS Word and in an email program, good spelling and grammatical skills and a solid understanding of sentence construction (they do not have to be perfect but you must be willing to look things up and learn to achieve a perfect finish), a willingness to think outside the square and a passion to work with your clients to achieve the best possible result.
A Point To Note
As I am an Australian résumé writer my key focus has been the Australian market. Therefore, this course has been written using Australian spelling, grammar, paper size and content preferences. Though the course is written with the Australian market particularly in mind, the greater majority of the information and guidelines are suitable for any country. Differences would include spelling and, to a small degree, grammar; paper size; personal details included or left out; photos regarded as necessary or discriminatory; whether the document is referred to as a résumé or a Curriculum Vitae.

When I first discovered there were other ways of writing résumés, that there were professional résumé writing associations, the opportunity to earn accreditation and even awards, I decided I liked what I saw.
I loved the creativity and the challenge and the results people were getting, but the only effective way open to learn was to be apprenticed to another professional résumé writer as a contractor or subcontractor as you learnt, working predominantly for the U.S. and Canadian markets.
The thought of being paid as I learnt appealed to me so I signed up – but rather than being taught as I went I was thrown in the deep end with a couple of templates, a mountain of information to ‘strategically’ extract ‘strategic’ information from and a turn around time of 24 hours. Only trouble was, I had virtually no instruction on how and it was a stressful and frustrating beginning.
Believe me – this is standard for résumé contractor newbies and these days it is becoming more common for professional résumé writers to only take on accredited writers as contractors as there is not the time to teach – not that there ever was!
This résumé course is laid out to guide you from the first logical step, to the next, to the next with loads of samples and hints to illustrate and help you along the way.
But before I go into the course with you I should qualify a few points:
This course is NOT a get rich quick scheme. True, there are those in the industry who earn close to or in excess of US$100,000 (on exchange rate at time of writing AU$124,000), however, they have reached that level through consistently working at their craft, diversifying their service offering, leveraging their knowledge and skills and delivering first class work. There is no magic formula that enables you to sit back and watch the money rolling in – it is a legitimate – and important – employment and career choice.
While there are sample résumés provided with the course material that may be used as templates in the early stages of your résumé writing career, the use of templates is not encouraged and is certainly not in your client’s best interest.
If you are intending to make résumé writing your career choice, or even a major service in your existing business, you will be encouraged to join one of the professional résumé writing associations and to gain international accreditation. There are also numerous home-based and virtual community groups with vast resources to assist you to grow your business.
OK - having qualified these important facts, let’s get on with the good stuff…
The course is designed to catapult you from rookie to skilled writer – from earning about AUD$35 for just typing up the style of résumé many now receive, to producing powerful, stand out documents at a reasonable expectation of AUD$150 to $200 per résumé and letter package when you finish the course, with the skills and know how to grow to AUD$250 to $300 plus over time.
The course is not the definitive end to résumé writing instruction. It is the beginning of the journey, a launching pad if you will. As I said right at the beginning, résumés are never static but are a reflection of changing times and needs. The level you ultimately achieve is totally your choice – and that’s exciting.
